Spotlight:
A Graduating MBA, Peter Harriman

by Irem Secil Reel

Peter Harriman learned the importance of being unique since he is one of quadruplets. He earned his bachelor degree from the University of Maine. Later, he worked in retail for U.S Cellular. “I helped the company with a successful launch of their Portland Market. I have learned much about marketing and especially grass root marketing at that time. I have experienced the power of grass root marketing. You can successfully capture a high market share with small scale and small time.”

He decided to “pursue an MBA degree to enrich a career in business world.” Peter has returned to UMaine after gaining five years of work experience. As a residence director on campus, he oversees a small staff of undergraduate residence assistances and manages the operations of resident halls on campus.

“Both of these past experiences taught me the importance of small team development and the potential of grass root marketing. With this in mind, I realized there was a need/void of a sense of community in the graduate business school. Irem Secil Reel and I made a market analysis of current students and then formed a volunteer committee. As a committee, we are organizing and structuring the new Graduate Business Association (GBA) of the University of Maine.”

Peter has initiated the reconstruction of the GBA with his uniting, tolerant and humorous attitude. He has successfully attracted new students to the GBA and led the committee in organizing a year-end banquet. He has started a dream of GBA organizing seminars, networking events, helping students to find internship and bringing alumni together.

“My hopes are that the GBA grows stronger as an organization and continues its outreach to past alumni. I, myself, hope to use my knowledge from my finance courses, my international trip to China, my internship with Bangor Savings Bank and my volunteer work with outside projects to succeed in a financial career in southern Maine.”

“I look forward to a point ten years from now when I asked by the future GBA officers to address current business graduates in the 10th Annual GBA Graduation Banquet.”
