Meet the Dean!
Dr. John Mahon

by Krystle Reilly

Dr. Mahon, Dean of the College of Business, Public Policy and Health, joined the faculty of the University of Maine Business School in January, 2001, where he taught the undergraduate and graduate capstone classes until 2004. At that time, he was asked to be the Provost, providing leadership for the University. He continued in this capacity until 2006, when he returned to teaching. However, his leadership skills were once again put to use in 2007, when he was asked to lead the College of BPPH as its Dean.

Dean Mahon has a vision for the Maine Business School. Ultimately his major goal is to make the University of Maine Business School well-known and more competitive.  He also wants to develop the graduate business programs in terms of growth and innovation. He hopes to achieve this goal by offering new tracks and partnering with the College of Engineering for a 5 year MBA plan among other initiatives. He is also talking with the University of Southern Maine to create a joint JD and MBA degree.

Dean Mahon feels that his goals would not be achieved without the faculty who provide the classes and experiences to students. He says that “Deans don’t make things happen. Deans help the faculty to make things happen.” He also wants students to know that the dean and faculty are not the only ones with good ideas to improve the Maine Business School. He suggests that if anyone has any ideas to go to the Graduate Business Association with the ideas and share them!
